Portland Food Photographer- Cranberry Bogs


I remember the first time I saw a cranberry bog.  I was driving in Southern Oregon with my husband, we were headed to Sonoma.  I kept noticing on the side of the road that the ground was sunken in and in specific rectangular patterns. I asked my husband if he knew what they were and he guessed (being that we were in Bandon at the time) that they were cranberry bogs.  Only he didn’t just say “bogs” in a regular tone he said it in a way that I would imagine a frog to say it.  It became a joke for that portion of the drive; every time we saw a plot we would say “bog” in our greatest frog-voice.  Four years later I returned to Bandon, Oregon this time on assignment with 1859 to photograph the Vincent Cranberry Farm.  It was the beginning of October and the Vincent family was about to start their harvest.  I was super excited for this assignment not just for the traveling aspect but because I was so intrigued on how they harvest cranberries.  The entire process was interesting and lead to some great photo opportunities.  The Vincent family was great to work with from the farming brothers to the energized kids and their crazy dog.  I could try to explain the process and talk more about the Vincent family but I’ll let the article that 1859 produced take the place of my words… after all I was hired to produce photos, not a story, I’ll let the professional writer handle the word portion.  The article is in the current 1859 (on stands now) and it’s the “Farm-to-Fork” section in the back of the magazine.  Check out my photos, check out the magazine and be sure to buy some of the Vincent Cranberry products… not only are the delicious (yes, I tried them) but you’ll also be supporting a local, family-owned farm.  Enjoy.
